Professionalization in

children's illustration

The second year of Children’s Illustration aims to consolidate the bases acquired by the students who have completed the first course of Children’s Illustration in order to advance one step further in the professional training of each one of them.

This course is also open to all illustrators who want to become professionals in Children’s Illustration.
As they have not gone through the first course, they will receive all the help and advice from the teachers to acquire or reinforce the style and manners of each one from the artistic essence and their creative talent.

Course definition and objectives

The main objective of this course is to provide you with the keys and make it easier for you to access the world of work in the publishing sector.

You will obtain the necessary management and organizational tools, also developing aspects such as identifying your image, creating a portfolio, planning your own projects, finding and accessing employment, etc.

You will be immersed in digital color techniques oriented to children’s illustration albums.

At the end of the course, you will have a meeting with editors who will give you feedback on your projects, thus bringing you closer to the main objective of the course: professionalization.

Content distribution

In the Professionalization of Children’s Illustration course, from October to June, you will have nine months of learning with Xavi Vilagut, Pam López and Rebecca Luciani, professional illustrators who will teach two classes per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m.) to help you reach your goals.

The program is divided into 2 blocks (two sections each block).

Section 1.
Every Tuesday from 5 to 8 pm.

Where to find ideas. In this first section we will work on the creation of an illustrated album, ending with a first project.

Creation of children’s illustration album.
Teacher: Xavi Vilagut

Section 2.
Every Tuesday from 5 to 8 pm.
We will work on the importance of having a coherent and own personal graphic.
We will adapt it to different formats.
We will finish the section with our own brand design, cards and stationery.

Masterclass: MIJURO

Every Thursday from 17 to 20h.
Creation of children’s illustration album.

Section 1.
Every Tuesday from 5 to 8 pm.

We will work on the management of our own business.
We are creative and have a business: we will create an action plan according to our wishes and generate a library of resources (customer search, invoicing, etc.).

Masterclass: APIC

Every Thursday from 17 to 20h.
Design and realization of posters, their application and, also, we will work on how to adapt children’s illustration to the product, in this case, something as magnificent as a toy store.

Section 2.
Every Tuesday from 5 to 8 pm.
Creation of online portfolio and physical portfolio.
For the meeting with publishers, we will work with mockups, postcards, merchandising, totes, etc.).

Creation of an illustrated album of own idea under the pretext of a contest.

END OF COURSE: Meeting with Publishers
A meeting with editors with time alone to show your work.
Normally, we work with three editors from three different markets so that we can accompany each other in situations that overwhelm us, such as a first meeting with an editor, but this time, we’ll all be together!

Registration

To access the children’s illustration course, an informative meeting with the Head of Studies at Escola Joso is required.

Qualification

The center’s own diploma awarded at the end of the Children’s Illustration course.

Course instructors

The course puts at the head of the regular program a specialized teaching team with recognized professional experience.
It is worth mentioning the intervention of external professionals who will complete the training offer through masterclasses.

It is not necessary to have previous studies since, the access to some courses such as Art Grafic, is assessed through a level test or with an interview with delivery of book.
This also occurs in the Illustration course, in Children Illustration, in Animation and in Concept Art.

In the case of having higher artistic studies, it will also be taken into account.

Access to the Art Grafic course is through a level test that consists of making a drawing following some guidelines.

Normally, the test is held during the month of April and there are two convocations.

Correction and notification of results are communicated about a week after the test is taken.
In the event that you do not pass the test, our course coordination team will guide you.

The access to the Illustration and Children’s Illustration courses is through an informative interview with the Head of Studies, where you must bring a small portfolio in order to assess your level and access to the course.
In this interview you will be able to solve any doubt about the courses, programs and objectives.

The access to the Animation course is through an interview with the course coordinator Juan Carlos Concha.
A specific book will be required.

Access to the Concept Art course is through an interview with the course coordinator Santi Casas.
A specific book will be required.

We can arrange the interview online.
We also offer the possibility to take the level test for the Art Grafic course online.

Normally, every year, during the month of March, we hold open house sessions to inform about everything related to our courses.
These are currently held in online format.

You can also come to ask for information and visit the school during our opening hours from Monday to Friday from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm and from 4.30 pm to 8 pm.

Our registration period for annual and summer courses starts in April.

Once you have passed the registration and enrollment process, we will send you a certificate so that you can apply for your student visa.

They are mainly taught in Spanish.
We have students from all over the world.

The didactic material and the paper used in class will be provided by the teacher, but the individual material will have to be brought by the student.

Every year in the month of July, we hold summer courses for 4 weeks in the month of July.

Most of these courses are beginners, although we also offer some specific courses where a certain level is required.
